Ulottuvuudenleikkauksia is a Finnish term that is not widely standardized in mathematics or science, but is sometimes used to describe operations that reduce the dimensionality of a space or dataset by “cutting” along dimensions. The phrase can be understood as a general reference to processes that produce lower-dimensional representations from higher-dimensional objects.

In mathematics, leikkaus (intersection) of subspaces is a well-defined operation. If U and V are subspaces of a common vector space, their intersection U ∩ V is the set of vectors that belong to both, and its dimension is at most the smaller of dim(U) and dim(V). A hyperplane cut, which intersects a space with a subspace of codimension one, typically yields a cross-section of dimension one less than the original space.
