Causes can include damage to the anal sphincters from childbirth or surgery, nerve damage from conditions like stroke or spinal cord injury, or impaired rectal sensation. Other contributing factors include chronic constipation leading to overflow incontinence, inflammatory bowel diseases, and certain medications.

Management of fecal incontinence varies depending on the underlying cause and severity. It may involve dietary changes, bowel retraining programs, pelvic floor exercises (Kegels), biofeedback therapy, and in some cases, surgical interventions. Addressing fecal incontinence is important for maintaining quality of life, as it can significantly impact social interactions and psychological well-being.
