uliuli

Uliuli, often written uli uli, is a traditional Hawaiian percussion instrument used in hula. It consists of two small spherical balls suspended from cords and decorated with feathers. When the dancer moves and shakes the balls, they produce a light rattling sound that complements chants and other instruments.

Construction and materials vary. Traditionally, the spheres are carved from wood or formed from dried gourds, sometimes wrapped in fabric or kapa, and adorned with feather plumes. The two balls are linked by a cord and held on the wrists or in the hands of the dancer. In contemporary practice, replicas may use synthetic feathers or alternative materials, but the basic form and function remain the same.

Performance and role. Uliuli are used in both traditional hula kahiko (ancient style) and modern hula auana performances. Dancers time their wrist and arm movements to emphasize rhythmic accents, with the sound helping to punctuate phrases in the chant or song. The instrument is typically part of a larger percussion setup that may include other elements such as ipu gourds or pahu drums.
