Uitwisselingsinteractie, or exchange interaction in English, is a fundamental concept in quantum mechanics describing the effect of two or more identical particles on each other due to the Pauli exclusion principle. When identical particles, such as electrons, are indistinguishable, their wavefunctions must obey certain symmetry rules. This indistinguishability leads to a non-classical interaction that depends on the spatial arrangement of the particles.

The exchange interaction is responsible for various phenomena. In atomic physics, it influences the energy levels of atoms, particularly in multi-electron systems, leading to the splitting of spectral lines.
