Uimahallariens, also known as Uimahallan, are a group of extinct, flightless birds that lived during the late Miocene epoch, approximately 10 million years ago. They are named after the Uima Formation in Kenya, where their fossils were first discovered. Uimahallariens are notable for their unique combination of features, including a long, straight beak, a large body size, and a mix of primitive and advanced characteristics.

These birds are classified within the order Galliformes, which includes modern birds like chickens, turkeys, and guineafowl. However, their exact placement within this order is debated among paleontologists. Some studies suggest they are closely related to modern ratites, such as ostriches and emus, while others propose they are more closely related to gallinaceous birds like chickens and turkeys.

Uimahallariens are known from several fossil sites in East Africa, including the Uima Formation in Kenya and the Lokochot Formation in Tanzania. Their fossils typically consist of well-preserved bones, providing valuable insights into their anatomy and biology. Despite their large size, estimated to be around 1.5 meters tall and weighing up to 100 kilograms, uimahallariens are believed to have been ground-dwelling birds, similar to modern ratites.

The extinction of uimahallariens is not well understood, but it is likely that they went extinct along with other Miocene birds as a result of climate change and the rise of mammals. Their fossils provide important evidence for the evolution of flightless birds and the diversification of the Galliformes order.
