It encompasses the collection, documentation, and critical assessment of eyewitness accounts, photographs, radar data, and other forms of evidence with the aim of understanding what has been observed and whether it can be explained by known natural or human-made causes. Ufology is not a formal scientific discipline; it is a field of inquiry that draws on multiple disciplines, including astronomy, aviation, meteorology, psychology, and folklore.

The term ufology emerged in the mid-20th century as UFO sightings drew public attention after World War II. Researchers such as J. Allen Hynek, an astronomer who advised the U.S. Air Force's Project Blue Book, helped popularize systematic investigation of unidentified objects. Over the decades, organized associations and networks formed worldwide, collecting witness reports and analyzing cases.

Methods in ufology include field investigations, structured interviews, analysis of visual and radar data, archival research, and the examination of physical traces or artifacts when available. Some ufologists advocate the extraterrestrial hypothesis (that some sightings originate from non-earthly craft) alongside alternative explanations such as misidentifications, hoaxes, or atmospheric phenomena.

The scientific status of ufology is debated. Mainstream science generally requires controlled, reproducible evidence, which many ufology investigations lack. Critics argue that anecdotal reports, selective reporting, and cognitive biases impede progress. Nevertheless, ufology has inspired official and non-official inquiries, government declassifications, and a substantial cultural presence through media and public interest.
