The operation of tíðaverkir is based on the natural rise and fall of the tide. During high tide, water is allowed to flow into a reservoir or mill pond, raising the water level. This elevated water is then released through a waterwheel or turbine, driving the machinery. The cycle is repeated with each tidal cycle, typically twice a day.

There are two main types of tíðaverkir: overshot and undershot mills. Overshot mills have the waterwheel positioned above the water level and are designed to take advantage of the higher water pressure at the beginning of the tide. Undershot mills, on the other hand, have the waterwheel positioned below the water level and are more efficient at lower water pressures.
