Térkapcsolati is a Hungarian term that denotes spatial relations—the ways in which objects or places relate to each other in space. In academic usage, it describes how entities occupy, move through, and relate to a shared environment, rather than their intrinsic properties.

Spatial relations are commonly categorized into several families: topological relations (inside, overlap, disjoint, touching); directional relations (left of, right of, north of, behind); distance-based relations (near, far); and orientation or alignment relations (horizontal, vertical, parallel). These relations can be described in natural language, formal logic, or computational representations, and may depend on the speaker’s frame of reference (egocentric vs allocentric).

In Hungarian scholarship, térkapcsolati terms describe how people understand and express spatial relations, influencing grammar and prepositions. More broadly, linguistics and cognitive science study how spatial relations are encoded in language and mental maps. In computer science and GIS, spatial relations are used to reason about space, enabling queries like “which objects are near this point” or “do two regions overlap?” Formal systems include topological calculi (RCC-8) and metric or directional logics.

Applications span cartography, robotics, navigation systems, virtual reality, and natural language processing. Challenges include context sensitivity, cultural variation in spatial terms, and the dynamic nature of space, requiring robust representations and scalable reasoning.
