Tætningsgrad is a term used primarily in Danish to describe the degree to which something is packed or filled. It denotes how densely components occupy a given volume or area, and is often expressed as a ratio or percentage. In different fields, it takes specific meanings but shares the core idea of density and compactness.

In materials science and geotechnical engineering, tætningsgrad usually refers to packing density or compaction. Bulk density, the mass of a material per total volume (kg/m^3), is a common measure, while the fraction of the volume occupied by solids (packing density) is dimensionless. Porosity is related and equals 1 minus packing density. In textiles or soils, the concept also relates to how tightly fibers or grains are arranged, influencing strength, permeability, and thermal properties.

In geography and urban planning, tætningsgrad can describe population density (inhabitants per square kilometer) or building density (built area per land area). These metrics inform infrastructure needs, land use planning, and environmental impact assessments.

Calculation and interpretation: density is mass divided by volume; packing density is a ratio of solid volume to total volume. Higher tætningsgrad generally increases mechanical strength and thermal conductivity but reduces porosity and permeability. It can also affect dielectric properties in composites and electrode packing in batteries.
