Tåreproduktionen, or tear production, is the physiological process by which tears are formed and secreted in the eye. This essential function is primarily carried out by the lacrimal glands, which are located above the outer corner of each eye. Tears are not just a simple saline solution; they are a complex mixture of water, electrolytes, proteins, lipids, and mucins, all working together to maintain ocular health.

There are three main types of tears. Basal tears are produced continuously in small amounts to lubricate, nourish, and protect the cornea. Reflex tears are secreted in response to irritants such as smoke, dust, onions, or even sudden bright lights. This type of tear helps to wash away the offending substance. Emotional tears, often associated with crying due to strong emotions like sadness or joy, are thought to contain stress hormones and natural painkillers, potentially serving an emotional release function.

The tear film, a thin layer of fluid covering the surface of the eye, is composed of three distinct layers: an outer lipid layer secreted by the meibomian glands, a middle aqueous layer from the lacrimal glands, and an inner mucin layer produced by goblet cells. This layered structure is crucial for tear stability, preventing rapid evaporation and ensuring a smooth optical surface for clear vision. Disruptions in tear production or composition can lead to dry eye disease, a common and often uncomfortable condition.
