While there isn't a single, universally recognized "tähekoodid" system in the way a barcode identifies a product, the term can encompass various approaches used by astronomers to classify and reference stars. These can include alphanumeric designations, numerical catalogs, or even more complex classification schemes based on stellar properties.

Historically, astronomers have developed numerous catalogs to list stars, each with its own system of identification. For example, the Bayer designation assigns Greek letters to prominent stars within constellations, followed by the genitive case of the constellation name (e.g., Alpha Centauri). The Flamsteed designation uses numbers instead of letters.
