A typpimolekyyli, also known as a nitrogen molecule, is a diatomic molecule with the chemical formula N2. It consists of two nitrogen atoms joined by a triple covalent bond. This triple bond is one of the strongest known chemical bonds, making the nitrogen molecule extremely stable and relatively unreactive under normal conditions.

Nitrogen gas (N2) makes up approximately 78% of Earth's atmosphere, making it the most abundant gas. Despite its abundance, the high stability of the N2 molecule means that atmospheric nitrogen is not readily available for biological use. Many organisms, particularly plants and animals, rely on a process called nitrogen fixation to convert atmospheric nitrogen into usable forms like ammonia and nitrates.

The N2 molecule is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. It is less dense than air. Its inertness makes it useful in various industrial applications, such as an inert atmosphere for welding and food packaging to prevent oxidation. In cryogenics, liquid nitrogen, which boils at -196 degrees Celsius (-320 degrees Fahrenheit), is used for rapid freezing and cooling. The N2 molecule plays a critical role in the nitrogen cycle, a biogeochemical process that circulates nitrogen through Earth's biosphere, atmosphere, and lithosphere.
