Tyhjiöeristettäviä, often translated as vacuum insulated panels (VIPs), are a type of high-performance insulation material. They consist of a porous core material, typically a fine powder like fumed silica or fiberglass, which is enclosed within a gas-impermeable outer envelope. The air is then evacuated from the envelope, creating a vacuum. This vacuum significantly reduces heat transfer through conduction and convection, as there are very few molecules to carry heat.

The effectiveness of tyhjiöeristettäviä as an insulator is due to the minimized molecular movement within the panel. Because there is no air or gas to facilitate heat transfer via these mechanisms, the primary mode of heat transfer becomes radiation, which is also mitigated by reflective layers often incorporated into the panel's construction. This results in very low thermal conductivity values, typically much lower than conventional insulation materials like foam or fiberglass.

The applications for tyhjiöeristettäviä are diverse, particularly where space is limited and high insulation performance is required. They are commonly used in high-end refrigerators and freezers to improve energy efficiency and reduce cabinet size. They can also be found in specialized applications such as portable coolers, temperature-controlled shipping containers, and in building construction where thin, highly effective insulation is needed. The main drawback is their cost and fragility; if the outer envelope is breached, the vacuum is lost, and the insulation performance drops dramatically.
