Työsuhdediskriminaatio refers to discrimination that occurs within an employment relationship. This can happen at any stage of employment, from recruitment and hiring to the terms and conditions of employment, promotion, training, and even termination. Finnish law, including the Equality Act and the Non-discrimination Act, prohibits discrimination based on various grounds. These grounds typically include gender, age, origin, nationality, language, religion, belief, disability, sexual orientation, and other personal characteristics.

Discrimination can manifest in several forms. Direct discrimination occurs when an individual is treated less favorably than another in a comparable situation because of a protected characteristic. Indirect discrimination occurs when a seemingly neutral provision, criterion, or practice puts individuals with a protected characteristic at a particular disadvantage compared to others, unless that provision, criterion, or practice is objectively justified by a legitimate aim and the means of achieving that aim are appropriate and necessary. Harassment, defined as unwanted conduct related to a protected characteristic that has the purpose or effect of violating an individual's dignity or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating, or offensive environment, is also considered a form of discrimination. Victimization, where an individual is treated unfavorably because they have made a complaint or raised a grievance about discrimination, is also prohibited.

If an employee believes they have been subjected to työsuhdediskriminaatio, they have the right to seek redress. This may involve internal grievance procedures within the workplace, or external legal avenues, such as reporting to the Discrimination Ombudsman or pursuing a case in court. Employers have a responsibility to prevent discrimination and to take appropriate measures to address any instances that occur.
