The tvärflöjt, also known as the transverse flute or simply flute, is a woodwind instrument that produces sound when air is blown across an edge. Despite its historical association with wood, modern flutes are typically made of metal, such as silver, gold, or nickel. It is part of the flute family, which also includes the piccolo, alto flute, and bass flute, each differing in size and pitch.

The modern concert flute is a cylindrical tube with a hole for blowing and a series of keys that cover and uncover additional holes. These keys alter the length of the vibrating air column, allowing the player to produce different notes. The sound is generated by the player directing a stream of air against the sharp edge of the embouchure hole, causing the air inside the tube to vibrate.
