tvrtí

Tvrtí (tvrť) is the Czech term for a quarter or district of a city. It denotes an urban subdivision used to describe a particular part of a town or city, often with its own historical identity or local character.

In contemporary Czech administration, the standard official subdivisions of cities are městská část (municipal district) or městský obvod (city district). The form tvrť/tvrtí survives mainly in historical texts, old maps, and colloquial speech, where it can refer to a neighborhood or area that is perceived as a distinct part of the city.

Historically, tvrti were used as organizational units within towns, sometimes tied to taxation, governance, or defense. Their boundaries could reflect medieval streets, fortifications, or landholdings. Over time, many municipalities redefined subdivisions into formal administrative units, reducing the administrative role of tvrti.

Today, tvrť is most often encountered as a historical term or in the context of place names and cultural references. It can convey a sense of local identity or character rather than a formal governmental unit.
