Turvallisuuslasi, also known as safety glass, is a type of glass that is designed to be safer than ordinary glass when broken. It is engineered to fracture in a less hazardous way, reducing the risk of cuts and injuries. There are several types of safety glass, each with its own method of achieving enhanced safety.

One common type is tempered glass, also called toughened glass. This glass undergoes a special heat treatment process where it is heated and then rapidly cooled. This rapid cooling creates internal stresses that make the glass much stronger and more resistant to breakage. When tempered glass does break, it shatters into small, relatively blunt fragments rather than sharp, jagged shards.

Another type is laminated glass. This is constructed by sandwiching a layer of plastic, typically polyvinyl butyral (PVB), between two layers of glass. When laminated glass breaks, the glass fragments adhere to the plastic interlayer, preventing them from scattering and creating a more secure barrier. This makes laminated glass particularly useful for applications where protection against impact or intrusion is important.

Safety glass is widely used in various applications where breakage could pose a risk. Examples include automotive windshields and side windows, architectural glass in doors and windows, shower enclosures, and display cases. The specific type of safety glass used often depends on the required level of safety and the intended application.
