Turnmilling is a hybrid machining process that combines the capabilities of both turning and milling. It is typically performed on a specialized lathe, often referred to as a turnmill center or multitasking machine, which is equipped with a milling spindle in addition to the traditional turning turret. This allows for complex shapes to be created in a single setup, reducing the need for multiple machine operations and workpiece transfers.

In a turnmilling operation, the workpiece rotates while a cutting tool, either a turning insert or a milling cutter, is fed to remove material. The milling spindle can be oriented at various angles, enabling the machining of features such as flats, slots, keyways, and even complex contours on the exterior or interior of the rotating workpiece. This flexibility is achieved through the use of live tooling, which is driven by a separate motor and can be engaged or disengaged as needed.

The primary advantage of turnmilling is its ability to perform both external and internal machining operations, as well as milling features, on a single part without re-fixturing. This significantly improves accuracy by eliminating errors introduced by workpiece repositioning.
