Turbineras are a specific type of beach or promontory that forms as the result of the erosion caused by ocean-waves, particularly those generated by storms. This process is often assisted by wave-induced tidal currents and sediment flows. In other words, they are a landform shaped and defined by wave action.

The term "turbinera" is often used in the coastal zone of the eastern coast of Spain, though the phenomenon itself is not unique to this area. Similar landforms can be found in many otherwise-similar coastal regions along the world's oceans. They are often found in areas of low-angle coast, which includes gently dipping slopes and can be intermixed areas with cliffs and rocky shores.

The erosion patterns observed on these shores vary widely depending on the unique aspects of the location's coast and sub-coastal sediment supply. Cross-shore sediment transport dominates the process which leads to the formation of a specific profile of the shore platforms and their seabed relief. Seawater waves and tides cause these forces to act upon the land, causing the constant erosion and changing face of the shore.

Depending on the individual location, a regular morphology or formative shape can develop and there may exist an osteonic dome on turbineras. While ecological differences produce similar inhabited dune-like enclaves isolated areas at a specific shore location are governed by the particular process, forms, features, and relevant results visible here, through ongoing weather and solely ocean constant forces and returned diverse influences.
