Tuotantokuilu, often translated as production gap or output gap, is an economic concept that refers to the difference between the actual output of an economy and its potential output. Potential output, also known as potential GDP or full-employment output, represents the maximum sustainable level of output an economy can produce when all its resources, including labor and capital, are fully and efficiently utilized without causing excessive inflation.

When actual output is greater than potential output, the economy is operating above its sustainable capacity. This situation is often referred to as a positive output gap and can lead to inflationary pressures as demand outstrips supply. Conversely, when actual output is less than potential output, there is a negative output gap, indicating that the economy is operating below its full potential.
