Tulies are a type of ephemeral flowering plant belonging to the genus Tulipa. These bulbs are native to temperate regions of Europe and Asia, with a significant center of diversity in Central Asia. Tulies are renowned for their striking, cup-shaped or star-shaped flowers, which come in an astonishing array of colors, including red, yellow, pink, purple, orange, white, and even black, as well as variegated patterns. They are popular ornamental plants, widely cultivated in gardens and for cut flower arrangements.

The genus Tulipa is part of the Liliaceae family. Tulies typically grow from bulbs, which are underground storage organs. They generally prefer well-drained soil and sunny locations. Their blooming season varies depending on the species and climate, but many varieties flower in spring. Wild tulies can be found in meadows, steppes, and rocky slopes. Over centuries, extensive hybridization and selective breeding have led to the development of thousands of cultivated varieties with diverse petal shapes, sizes, and flowering times. These cultivated varieties are often categorized into groups based on their characteristics, such as Darwin hybrids, Triumph, Lily-flowered, and Parrot tulies. The cultivation of tulies has a long history, particularly in the Netherlands, where the "tulip mania" of the 17th century is a well-known historical event.
