Tulehdusoireina refers to the signs and symptoms that indicate the presence of inflammation in the body. Inflammation is a natural biological response of the immune system to protect itself from harmful stimuli, such as pathogens, damaged cells, or irritants. While it is a crucial protective mechanism, uncontrolled or chronic inflammation can lead to various diseases.

Common local signs of inflammation include redness (rubor), heat (calor), swelling (tumor), pain (dolor), and loss of function (functio laesa). Redness is caused by increased blood flow to the affected area. Heat results from the increased blood flow and metabolic activity. Swelling occurs due to the accumulation of fluid and immune cells in the tissues. Pain is often a result of the swelling pressing on nerve endings and the release of inflammatory mediators. Loss of function can occur due to pain, swelling, or damage to the affected tissue.

Systemic signs of inflammation can also manifest throughout the body. These may include fever, which is an elevated body temperature, and malaise, a general feeling of discomfort, illness, or uneasiness. Fatigue, headaches, and loss of appetite are also common systemic symptoms. In more severe cases, inflammation can lead to increased heart rate, rapid breathing, and a general feeling of being unwell. Laboratory tests, such as elevated white blood cell counts or specific inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein (CRP), can also indicate the presence of inflammation.
