Trykrelief refers to the reduction or prevention of excessive pressure in a system through devices or procedures designed to relieve pressure when it exceeds a safe level. In engineering and process safety, it most commonly denotes automatic pressure-relief devices that vent gas or liquid to avoid vessel rupture, equipment damage, or process upsets.

The principal mechanisms are pressure relief valves, safety valves, and rupture discs. A relief valve responds to rising pressure by opening a controlled amount and releasing fluid until pressure returns to the setpoint.
