Tryckeriet is a term used in Danish, Norwegian and Swedish to denote a printing house or print shop—a facility where printed matter is produced on industrial presses and through related processes. Historically, tryckerier emerged with the advent of movable type in the 15th century and expanded during the printing revolution. In Nordic contexts they produced books, newspapers, posters, catalogs and packaging, and they have played a central role in disseminating information and culture.

Modern tryckerier operate through several stages: prepress (design, layout, color management and plate or file preparation), the printing process itself (sheet-fed offset presses are common, while web-fed presses handle large volumes; digital presses enable short runs and customization; specialty work may still use letterpress or gravure), and finishing (cutting, folding, binding, laminating). Many facilities house multiple departments under one roof to serve publishers, advertisers and commercial clients.

Technology has shifted from traditional letterpress and lithography toward offset and, more recently, digital printing. The choice of method depends on run size, quality requirements, and deadlines. Environmental considerations have become increasingly important: many tryckerier use recycled paper, water-based inks, energy-efficient presses, and systems for waste management and chemical handling, pursuing certifications related to sustainability.

Today the term also appears as a generic name for local print shops in towns and industrial areas. While digital media reduce demand for some kinds of print, tryckerier continue to fulfill needs for high-volume commercial printing, packaging, security printing, and high-quality books and catalogs, where physical output and color fidelity remain essential.
