Trotskismen is a political ideology and a branch of Marxism that advocates for world revolution and the establishment of a socialist society. It is named after Leon Trotsky, a Russian revolutionary, Marxist theorist, and politician who was a leader of the Bolshevik Revolution and a key figure in the early Soviet Union. Trotsky's political theories diverged from those of Joseph Stalin, particularly regarding the concept of "socialism in one country."

Trotsky believed that socialism could only be successfully established through a permanent global revolution, where socialist states would actively support and encourage revolutions in other countries. He argued against Stalin's idea that the Soviet Union could build socialism in isolation. Key tenets of Trotskyism include the concept of "uneven and combined development," which explains how different societies develop at different rates and can skip stages of development.

Trotskyists also emphasize the importance of the working class as the revolutionary agent and advocate for the creation of a vanguard party to lead the proletariat. They are critical of what they perceive as the degeneration of the Soviet Union under Stalin, viewing it as a bureaucratic state that betrayed the principles of the October Revolution. While distinct from other Marxist-Leninist currents, Trotskyism shares core beliefs in class struggle, the abolition of capitalism, and the eventual realization of communism. Organizations identifying with Trotskyist principles exist in many countries worldwide, though they often face internal debates and splintering.
