Trimethylbenzenes are a group of three aromatic hydrocarbon compounds with the chemical formula C9H12. The three isomers are 1,2,3-trimethylbenzene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, also known as hemimellitene, pseudocumene, and mesitylene, respectively.

These compounds are typically colorless liquids with a sweet odor. They are sparingly soluble in water but miscible with organic solvents like ethanol and ether. Trimethylbenzenes are often found as components of petroleum distillates and coal tar. They are produced industrially through the alkylation of toluene or xylene with methanol, or by the disproportionation of xylenes.

Trimethylbenzenes find various applications. 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene (pseudocumene) is a significant precursor in the production of trimellitic anhydride, which is used in the manufacture of plasticizers, resins, and dyes. Mesitylene (1,3,5-trimethylbenzene) is used as a solvent and as a starting material for the synthesis of antioxidants and UV stabilizers. Hemimellitene (1,2,3-trimethylbenzene) has more limited industrial uses but can be employed in organic synthesis.

Exposure to trimethylbenzenes can occur through inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact. They are considered to have low to moderate toxicity. Symptoms of acute exposure may include irritation of the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, as well as central nervous system effects like headache, dizziness, and nausea. Long-term exposure data is less extensive but suggests potential for liver and kidney effects.
