Pseudocumene, also known as 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C9H12. It is a colorless liquid with a sweet, aromatic odor. Pseudocumene is one of the three isomers of trimethylbenzene, the other two being hemimellitene (1,2,3-trimethylbenzene) and mesitylene (1,3,5-trimethylbenzene).

Pseudocumene is primarily derived from coal tar and petroleum. It is found in coal tar fractions boiling between 165 and 175 degrees Celsius. Industrially, it is often produced by the alkylation of toluene or xylene.

The primary use of pseudocumene is as a precursor in the synthesis of other chemicals. It is a key intermediate in the production of trimellitic anhydride, which is used to manufacture plasticizers, polymers, and resins. Pseudocumene can also be oxidized to form trimellitic acid. It finds application as a solvent and in the formulation of some pesticides and dyes.

In terms of properties, pseudocumene is flammable and has a relatively low vapor pressure. It is sparingly soluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents.
