Trenivålasrar are a category of laser systems designed specifically for integration with railway transit infrastructure. The term originates from Swedish, where "treni" refers to a train and "vålasrar" is a blend of "våg" (wave) and "lasrar" (lasers), indicating wave-based laser technology for trains. The primary objective of trenivålasrar is to enhance rail vehicle performance and safety through active control of train dynamics and real‑time monitoring of track conditions.

The concept emerged in the 1990s as part of Europe’s broader effort to modernise high‑speed rail. Early prototypes were mounted on the ballast track of the German ICE network, where they measured sub‑millimetre vibrations and detected rail defects. By 2005 the technology had been refined for use on Scandinavian high‑speed lines, where it also contributed to precision braking by illuminating rail junctions for adaptive control algorithms.

A typical trenivålasr system consists of a high‑power, solid‑state laser source, an optical fibre distribution network, and photovoltaic sensors deployed along the track. The emitted beam is modulated to encode data about the train’s heading and velocity; the returning signal is analyzed for variations caused by track irregularities, railhead wear, or environmental conditions. This data enables predictive maintenance, reduces derailment risk, and allows smoother acceleration and deceleration profiles.

In addition to safety applications, trenivålasrar are being explored for energy harvesting. By capturing reflected light from the train’s side windows, a small portion of the beam can be converted into electrical energy to power onboard signalling systems, thereby reducing the vehicles’ power draw. The next generation of trenivålasrar aims to integrate adaptive optics, enabling finer spatial resolution and the possibility of active noise cancellation on the track bed.
