While simple, trendlinjes are a common tool in technical analysis and data visualization.

Trendlinjes are typically drawn by connecting two or more relevant price points. In an uptrend, the line is drawn along successive higher lows and is expected to act as support if prices retreat. In a downtrend, the line follows successive lower highs and may act as resistance as prices rise. The line is usually extended beyond the last point to project potential future support or resistance. The method may be subjective, with traders choosing which points to connect and which time frame to use.

Beyond the basic straight line, trendlinjes can take non-linear forms or be derived from statistical methods. A linear regression line or least-squares trendline provides a best-fit line for a data set, while moving averages offer a smoothed representation of trend. Polynomial or exponential trendlines can model complex patterns when prices exhibit curvature or varying growth rates.

Limitations include subjectivity in point selection, sensitivity to the chosen time frame, and the possibility of false signals or breakouts.
