Trendfronten is a term used in meteorology to describe the leading edge of a weather system, particularly where a distinct change in atmospheric conditions is occurring. This front is characterized by significant shifts in temperature, humidity, wind direction, and pressure. It is the boundary zone where different air masses meet and interact.

The most common types of trendfronten are cold fronts and warm fronts. A cold front marks the leading edge of a colder air mass pushing into a warmer one. This often brings about rapid changes, including a drop in temperature, increased wind speed, and potentially the development of cumulonimbus clouds leading to thunderstorms or heavy precipitation. A warm front, conversely, is the boundary where a warmer air mass is advancing and replacing a cooler one. This typically results in a gradual rise in temperature and can cause widespread, less intense precipitation, often associated with stratus clouds.

Other types of fronts, such as occluded fronts and stationary fronts, also represent specific types of trendfronten. An occluded front forms when a faster-moving cold front catches up to a warm front, lifting the warm air mass off the ground. A stationary front occurs when a boundary between two different air masses remains in place without significant movement.
