transthoracically

Transthoracically is an adverb describing an action performed across or through the chest wall. It is derived from transthoracic, an adjective referring to the chest region (the thorax), with the -ly suffix forming the adverb. The term is predominantly used in medical and clinical contexts, where procedures or measurements access structures through the chest wall rather than via internal or other routes.

Common uses include transthoracic imaging and interventions. Transthoracic echocardiography, for example, is a noninvasive ultrasound examination conducted transthoracically with a transducer placed on the chest wall. Transthoracic needle biopsy involves inserting a biopsy needle through the chest wall to obtain tissue from the lung or chest structures. The adverb can describe the approach of a device, needle, catheter, or therapeutic technique performed via the chest wall.

Transthoracically contrasts with intrathoracically (inside the thoracic cavity) or transesophageal (through the esophagus). It is related to, but distinct from, transsternal approaches (through the sternum) and other chest-access routes. In radiology and surgery, explicit description of the access path helps convey potential risks, such as pneumothorax with chest-wall punctures.

Although primarily found in professional medical writing, the term can appear in clinical reports to describe how an instrument or therapy is delivered. Outside professional contexts, its usage is rare, and simpler phrases like “through the chest wall” are often preferred for clarity.
