Transpositiot is a Finnish term that broadly refers to transpositions—operations or results that move elements from one position to another while preserving their internal relationships. In Finnish academic and technical usage, the word covers several senses that share the underlying idea of reordering or relocating components. The English cognate transposition has distinct technical senses across fields, and the plural form emphasizes multiple instances or types of such operations.

In music theory, transposition refers to moving a piece, passage, or melody to a different pitch level by a fixed interval. This shifts every note by the same amount while keeping the melodic contour and intervals intact. Transposition is used to accommodate vocal ranges, instrument requirements, or to adapt repertoire to different concert keys. It is not the same as modulation, which generally involves a change of tonal center and harmonic background.

In mathematics and linear algebra, the transpose of a matrix is obtained by swapping its rows and columns; for a vector, the transpose converts a column vector to a row vector, and vice versa. The operation is commonly denoted by a superscript T (for example, A^T). Transposition can also describe analogous reordering processes in sets, sequences, or coordinate systems.

In cryptography, a transposition cipher permutes the characters of plaintext according to a fixed system, producing ciphertext without altering the characters themselves.
