Transmission reflect is a term used in optics and photonics to describe the simultaneous occurrence of transmission and reflection of a wave—typically light or electromagnetic radiation—when it encounters a boundary between two media. The corresponding amplitudes and intensities of the transmitted and reflected components are governed by the Fresnel equations, which take into account the incident angle, polarization state, and refractive indices of the adjoining materials.

The Fresnel equations produce the transmittance T and reflectance R, defined as the ratios of transmitted and reflected power to the incident power. For normal incidence of unpolarized light, R = [(n1 – n2)/(n1 + n2)]² and T = 1 – R, where n1 and n2 are the refractive indices. At oblique incidence, separate expressions apply for s- and p-polarizations, and the sum of T and R remains unity in the absence of absorption.

Transmission reflect properties are central to the design of anti‑reflective coatings, optical filters, and waveguide couplers. They also determine the efficiency of solar panels, the brightness of display devices, and signal loss in fiber‑optic communication systems. In many practical settings, coating stacks are engineered to minimize R while maximizing T for a specific wavelength range.
