A transaksjonsmanager, or transaction manager, is a software component responsible for coordinating transactions within a distributed system. It ensures that a series of operations are treated as a single, atomic unit, meaning either all operations succeed or none of them do. This is crucial for maintaining data consistency and integrity, especially in environments where multiple systems or services interact.

The primary function of a transaksjonsmanager is to implement and enforce the ACID properties of transactions: Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, and Durability. Atomicity guarantees that a transaction is all-or-nothing. Consistency ensures that a transaction brings the system from one valid state to another. Isolation prevents concurrent transactions from interfering with each other. Durability ensures that once a transaction is committed, its changes are permanent.

Transaksjonsmanagers typically employ protocols like two-phase commit (2PC) to coordinate transactions across multiple participants, such as databases or message queues. In 2PC, a coordinator asks all participants if they are ready to commit. If all agree, the coordinator instructs them to commit. If any participant cannot commit, the coordinator instructs all to roll back. This mechanism ensures that all participants either commit or abort together, maintaining atomicity across the distributed system. Without a transaksjonsmanager, managing complex, multi-system operations would be significantly more challenging and prone to errors.
