Trakeidien, the Dutch term for tracheids, are elongated, lignified cells in the xylem of vascular plants that serve in water transport and structural support. In English, tracheids are described as long, tapered cells that align end-to-end to form continuous water-conducting pathways through the plant’s woody tissue.

Structurally, tracheids have thick secondary cell walls and may exhibit various wall thickenings, including annular, spiral, scalariform, or reticulate patterns. Water moves between tracheids mainly through bordered pits, which occur in the walls at ends or along sides and allow lateral transfer without forming perforations. At maturity, tracheids are largely dead, leaving hollow conduits lined by lignified cell walls.

Functionally, tracheids contribute to both water transport and mechanical support. They are the primary or sole xylem conduits in many primitive plants and in gymnosperms, where vessels are less common. In many angiosperms, tracheids coexist with vessel elements and fibers, contributing to transport alongside/distributing hydraulic load and reinforcing the xylem’s structure. The lack of perforation plates in tracheids makes water movement slower than in vessels, but their narrow diameter and pit configuration can reduce the risk of embolism, especially under drought or freezing conditions.

Distribution and evolution-wise, tracheids are found across most vascular plant lineages, including gymnosperms, ferns, and lycophytes, with their prominence varying by lineage. They are often preserved in fossil xylem and provide valuable information for phylogeny and paleoenvironments.
