Totipalmation is a biological term describing a condition in which all digits of a limb are connected by interdigital membranes, producing a fully palmate foot or hand. In vertebrates, the term is most often applied to birds, where complete interdigital webbing enhances propulsion in water. The word derives from Latin totus, meaning “all,” and palma, meaning “palm,” with the suffix -ation indicating a process or state.

In birds, totipalmation refers to feet in which the toes and the hallux are united by a continuous interdigital membrane, creating a fully palmate foot. This trait is most conspicuous in many waterfowl, such as ducks and swans, and is associated with efficient underwater locomotion. Totipalmation has also been inferred in extinct aquatic birds where preserved anatomy suggests full foot webbing.

Developmentally, totipalmation results from changes in embryonic tissue regulation that alter the pattern of interdigital apoptosis, allowing tissue between the toes to persist and form a membrane. The trait likely evolved under selective pressure for aquatic foraging, though it may incur costs for terrestrial locomotion and maneuverability on land.

Evolutionary and taxonomic notes: totipalmation is a defined state within the broader spectrum of palmate foot morphologies, which also includes partly palmate and non-palmate configurations. While common among many diving or surface-foraging birds, it is not universal across all aquatic birds; degrees of interdigital webbing vary within the avian clade.
