Torrsumpsystemet, also known as a dry sump lubrication system, is an engine lubrication method that differs significantly from the more common wet sump system. In a wet sump system, the engine oil is stored in a reservoir located at the bottom of the engine, typically in the oil pan. The oil pump then draws oil directly from this pan and circulates it throughout the engine.

In contrast, a torrsumpsystemet utilizes a separate oil tank located away from the engine, often elsewhere in the vehicle's chassis. This tank is connected to the engine via a scavenging pump system. This system actively pumps oil out of the engine's crankcase and into the remote oil tank. The main oil pump then draws oil from this remote tank and circulates it to the engine's lubrication points.

The primary advantages of a torrsumpsystemet include improved oil control and engine cooling. By actively removing oil from the crankcase, it prevents the crankshaft from churning the oil, which can lead to aeration and reduced lubrication efficiency, especially during high-speed or cornering maneuvers. This also allows for a lower engine mounting position, lowering the vehicle's center of gravity. The larger capacity of a remote oil tank can also enhance oil cooling. However, torrsumpsystemet is more complex, heavier, and costlier to implement than a wet sump system. It is typically found in high-performance and racing applications where these advantages are critical.
