Torrformulering, or dry formulation, refers to the design and production of products in which active ingredients are formulated as dry solids—such as powders, granules, or pellets—instead of liquids. The term is used across pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food supplements and encompasses solid dosage forms (tablets and capsules), dry powders for inhalation, and reconstitutable products where the dry form is stored and later turned into a liquid.

In pharmaceuticals, torrformulering enables stable solid formulations and inhalation products. Carriers and excipients are combined with the active ingredient to achieve suitable flow, compressibility, and dose uniformity. Dry formulations can also be used for nasal or oral powders and for topical or dermatological powders. In cosmetics and personal care, loose or compacted powders are common dry formulations that influence texture, finish, and stability.

Common manufacturing methods include spray drying, roller compaction and dry granulation, crystallization, milling, and blending. These methods produce powders or granules with controlled particle size, moisture content, and particle morphology, which in turn affect flowability, compaction, and dissolution (where applicable).

Advantages of torrformulering include improved chemical stability and longer shelf life, no need for cold chains for certain products, convenient packaging and dosing, and suitability for inhalation or solid oral forms. Challenges include sensitivity to moisture, requirements for careful handling to maintain powder flow and uniformity, and, for some drugs, lower bioavailability if not properly formulated. Regulatory oversight focuses on content uniformity, particle size distribution, moisture content, and stability testing to ensure consistent performance.
