Toppning is a horticultural pruning technique that involves removing the apex, or top bud, of a plant shoot. The term, rooted in Swedish usage, refers to cutting off the very top of a stem to influence growth form. Toppning is used to reduce plant height, interrupt apical dominance, and stimulate the development of lateral shoots, which can create a bushier plant or help shape hedges, topiaries, or ornamental forms.

Methodically, toppning usually means cutting back to a bud or node. The cut can be made to a single bud to encourage one strong shoot nearby, or to several buds to produce multiple new axes. The exact approach depends on species, vigor, and the desired final form. In fruit trees, shrubs and woody ornamentals, toppning can help control vigor, improve light penetration, and facilitate easier harvesting or maintenance.

The plant’s response to toppning centers on the reduction of apical dominance. With the apical bud removed, latent buds below the cut are released and may develop into new branches. While this can yield a fuller, more productive plant, excessive or repeated toppning can lead to weak wood, dense new growth that requires additional pruning, or increased susceptibility to disease and environmental stress if cuts heal poorly or expose wood to damage.

Applications vary by species. Toppning is common in training shrubs and hedges, establishing certain ornamental shapes, and managing growth in some fruit-tree systems. It is not universally suitable; some plants respond poorly to frequent topping, and timing, cut quality, and subsequent maintenance are important to maintain plant health and structure.
