Topladers is a term used to describe a type of washing machine where the clothes are loaded from the top. This is in contrast to front-loading machines, which have their doors on the front. Top-loading machines typically feature a vertical drum that spins to agitate and clean the clothes. They can be further categorized into two main types: agitator models and impeller models.

Agitator top-loaders have a central post, the agitator, that twists and turns, rubbing against the clothes to move them through the water and detergent. Impeller top-loaders, also known as high-efficiency (HE) top-loaders, use a low-profile cone or disc at the bottom of the drum that rotates, creating currents to move the clothes. These models generally use less water than agitator models.

Top-loading machines are often favored for their ease of loading and unloading, as users do not need to bend over as much. They also tend to have shorter wash cycles and are generally less expensive upfront than front-loading machines. Maintenance can also be simpler in some cases, and the lid can be opened mid-cycle to add forgotten items. However, some studies suggest that front-loaders may be more energy and water-efficient and offer a more thorough clean in certain situations. The choice between top-loader and front-loader often comes down to user preference, budget, and specific laundry needs.
