Tonometry is the measurement of pressure within a hollow organ or space in the body. The adverb tonometrically (tonometrisesti in Finnish) describes performing a measurement by tonometry. The term is most commonly used in ophthalmology, where intraocular pressure (IOP) is monitored because elevated IOP is a major risk factor for glaucoma.

Tonometric readings help assess risk, guide treatment decisions, and monitor response to therapy. Several techniques exist: Goldmann applanation tonometry uses a prism to flatten a small area of the cornea under slit-lamp examination; indentation tonometry (Schiotz) measures corneal indentation; non-contact tonometry uses an air puff to applanate; rebound tonometry uses a small probe that briefly contacts the cornea; dynamic contour tonometry uses a sensor that conforms to the corneal contour.

Readings can be influenced by corneal thickness and rigidity, corneal surface conditions, recent contact lens wear, and time of day. Normal IOP is commonly cited as roughly 10–21 mmHg, though interpretation depends on the individual and other glaucoma risk factors. Tonometry is typically performed during routine eye exams and follows calibration and sterilization practices to minimize infection risk.

Although tonometric IOP is an important parameter, it is only one part of glaucoma assessment; evaluation of the optic nerve, visual fields, and other risk factors is essential for a complete diagnosis.
