Tonicitásváltozások refers to changes in tonicity. Tonicity describes the relative concentration of solutes dissolved in a solution and therefore the tendency of water to move across a semipermeable membrane, such as a cell membrane. This concept is particularly relevant in biology and medicine, especially when discussing fluid balance and the effects of solutions on cells.

In a biological context, tonicity is crucial for maintaining cell integrity. When a cell is placed in a solution with a different tonicity, water will move by osmosis from an area of lower solute concentration to an area of higher solute concentration. If a cell is placed in a hypotonic solution (lower solute concentration outside the cell), water will enter the cell, causing it to swell and potentially burst (lysis). Conversely, if a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution (higher solute concentration outside the cell), water will leave the cell, causing it to shrink and shrivel (crenation). An isotonic solution has the same solute concentration as the cell, resulting in no net movement of water and the cell maintaining its normal shape.

For instance, rapid intravenous fluid administration can alter the tonicity of the extracellular fluid, impacting cell volume. Dehydration or overhydration can also lead to significant tonicity changes in the body. Medical treatments often involve administering solutions of specific tonicities to manage fluid and electrolyte balance, such as in cases of dehydration, edema, or during surgery. Understanding tonicity changes is therefore fundamental for diagnosing and treating a wide range of medical conditions.
