The word tommestokke is the plural form of tommestok, literally “inch-stick” or “ruler,” and historically referred to a folding or segmented ruler that could be extended to measure longer distances.

Historically, tommestokke evolved from simple wooden rulers to hinged folding rules in the 17th to 19th centuries, making it easier to carry and measure on site. In Danish use, the term often denotes a folding rule with several hinged panels, typically measuring 1 to 2 meters when fully extended.

Construction and markings: common designs are wooden or composite, with clear graduations in imperial inches or metric centimeters depending on the region and age. Some variants include a sliding rule or a metal edge for durability.

Current status: In modern Denmark and Norway, meter sticks and tape measures have largely supplanted traditional tommestokke in everyday use, but antique tommestokke remain collectible and are studied by historians of technology and woodworking. They are also used by hobbyists who appreciate traditional hand tools.
