It refers to the act of creating or promoting a cryptocurrency token with the intention of quickly devaluing it after initial investment, thereby defrauding early investors. The term is a portmanteau of "token," referring to a digital asset on a blockchain, and "kenning," which in Old Norse poetry refers to a metaphorical compound expression, often used to describe a concept in a new way. In the context of tokenkenning, the "kenning" aspect can be seen as a novel method for extracting value from investors.

The process often involves hyping a new token with promises of significant future value, partnerships, or technological advancements. Investors are encouraged to buy in early, driving up the token's price. Once a substantial amount of money has been invested, the creators or early holders of the token rapidly sell off their holdings. This mass sell-off causes the token's price to crash, leaving the majority of investors with worthless assets. The perpetrators then disappear, taking the profits with them. Tokenkenning is often associated with "rug pulls," where the developers of a decentralized finance project suddenly withdraw liquidity, causing the token's price to plummet. It is considered a form of exit scam within the cryptocurrency space. Investors are advised to conduct thorough research and exercise caution when engaging with new or unproven token projects.
