Toimintarata, in Finnish aerospace terminology, refers to the orbital path or trajectory that a spacecraft follows during the operational phase of its mission. The plural form toimintaratoja denotes multiple such orbits used within a mission or program. The term contrasts with earlier flight phases such as launch, transfer, and insertion, as well as with disposal or reentry trajectories.

An operating orbit is characterized by its orbital elements—altitude or semi-major axis, inclination, eccentricity, and period—and by mission-specific requirements such as ground-station visibility, sensor geometry, power generation, thermal environment, and communication geometry. The choice of toimintarata is driven by mission objectives (for example, Earth observation, communications or science goals) and by practical constraints like propulsion, propellant budget, debris mitigation, and mission duration. Once in operation, the spacecraft may perform station-keeping maneuvers to maintain the orbit and to compensate for perturbations from gravitational harmonics, solar radiation pressure, and atmospheric drag.

In practice, missions often use a sequence that includes deployment into a transfer or parking orbit, transition to a primary toimintarata, and, later in the life cycle, transition to disposal or alternate trajectories. Common examples of operating orbits include geostationary orbits for communications, low Earth orbits for imaging and remote sensing, and sun-synchronous orbits for consistent lighting conditions. The concept of toimintarata helps mission planners evaluate trade-offs between coverage, revisit times, propellant needs, and mission risk.
