Toiduahelate, in ecology, refer to linear sequences of organisms through which energy and nutrients flow from producers to consumers. At the base are autotrophic producers such as plants, algae, or cyanobacteria that capture solar energy. Primary consumers, often herbivores, feed on producers, passing energy to secondary consumers that prey on the primary consumers, and so on. Decomposers and detritivores—such as bacteria, fungi, and scavengers—break down dead organic matter and recycle nutrients; while they are not always shown in the chain, they interact with all levels and sustain the system.
