Common applications include access to mechanical and electrical installations behind walls or in ceiling voids, floor access to plumbing or drainage, roof spaces, basements, and crawl spaces. They come in various forms, such as service access panels, inspection hatches, floor hatches, and wall or ceiling access panels. Some are hinged for frequent access, others are removable or sliding.

Construction and materials vary: frames may be integrated or separate; openings may be flush or face-mounted. Materials include steel, stainless steel, aluminium, wood, and durable plastics, with finishes such as powder coating or galvanised surfaces. Seals and gaskets provide dust, water, or air-tightness. Fire-resistance, acoustic insulation, and thermal performance can be part of the specification, with products offered to meet relevant standards and installation conditions.

Installation considerations include secure anchoring to structural elements, proper alignment with surrounding surfaces for flush mounting, and provision of safe operation and lockability. When located in exposed or damp areas, weatherproof and IP-rated options may be chosen. Routine inspection should cover hinges, latches, seals, and frame integrity to ensure continued performance.
