Timecoding is the process of assigning a specific timecode to each frame of video or audio material. A timecode is a unique sequence of numbers that identifies a specific point in time within a media file. It typically follows a format of hours, minutes, seconds, and frames (HH:MM:SS:FF). This system is crucial for precise editing, logging, and referencing of media content.

The primary purpose of timecoding is to provide a universal and unambiguous way to locate and identify any given point in a video or audio recording. This allows editors to work collaboratively, as they can communicate specific points in the material using the timecode reference. It also aids in the creation of detailed logs, where significant events or takes can be marked with their corresponding timecode for easy retrieval.
