Tilbakemeldingsløyfe, commonly translated as feedback loop, is a fundamental concept in systems theory and cybernetics. It describes a process where the output of a system or process is fed back as input, influencing future behavior. This creates a cycle of cause and effect that can either stabilize or destabilize a system.

There are two main types of feedback loops: positive feedback and negative feedback. In a negative feedback loop, the output of a system counteracts the initial change, leading to stability. For example, a thermostat in a room senses the temperature and activates the heating or cooling system to maintain a set point. If the temperature rises above the set point, the cooling system turns on; if it falls below, the heating system turns on. This opposing action helps keep the temperature within a desired range.

In contrast, a positive feedback loop amplifies the initial change, leading to growth or instability. An example is the microphone and speaker system producing a loud squeal when the microphone is too close to the speaker. The sound from the speaker is picked up by the microphone, amplified, and re-emitted by the speaker, creating an ever-increasing sound level. In biological systems, childbirth involves a positive feedback loop where uterine contractions stimulate the release of oxytocin, which in turn intensifies contractions, until the baby is born. Understanding feedback loops is crucial for analyzing and controlling the behavior of complex systems in various fields, including engineering, biology, economics, and social sciences.
