Tilasuhteilla is a Finnish linguistic term used to describe spatial relations, i.e., how languages encode the positions and movements of objects in space. The concept covers both the semantic distinctions of space (such as inside, on, near, far) and the grammatical means used to express them, including case marking, prepositions, postpositions, and lexical expressions.

In Finnish, tilasuhteita are typically expressed through locative cases and related constructions. Locative forms such as inessive (on inside), adessive (on on a surface), allative (onto), elative (from a surface), illative (into), and others encode where something is located or how it moves relative to a reference object. These forms interact with postpositions and compound phrases to convey direction, distance, and orientation. For example, kissa pöydällä means a cat on the table, while kissa pöydän päällä conveys the idea of being on the top surface of the table.

Frames of reference also shape tilasuhteiden analysis. Languages may prefer intrinsic, relative, or absolute frames of reference to describe space, leading to different encoding patterns. Finnish commonly relies on a rich system of locative morphology, whereas other languages might rely more on prepositions or particle-based expressions.

Applications of tilasuhteiden study include linguistic typology, language description, language teaching, cognitive science, and natural language processing. By analyzing tilasuhteita, researchers gain insights into how speakers conceptualize space and how these concepts are encoded across languages.
